Background of the study
Facebook and Instagram are key platforms driving linguistic innovation in Nigeria, each fostering distinct language practices. On Facebook, users engage in extended, narrative-driven posts that blend formal language with local dialects, while Instagram’s visual focus encourages succinct, creative expressions often accompanied by innovative hashtags and captions (Okeke, 2023). These platforms collectively contribute to the evolution of digital language by promoting neologisms, syntactic experimentation, and semantic shifts that reflect contemporary cultural trends. The study compares language use on both platforms to examine how their unique affordances influence linguistic creativity and innovation in Nigerian digital discourse (Ibrahim, 2024).

Statement of the problem
Despite the evident role of social media in spurring linguistic innovation in Nigeria, few studies have systematically compared the contributions of Facebook and Instagram. Existing research often treats digital language evolution as a homogenous process, thereby neglecting platform-specific dynamics. This gap necessitates a comparative analysis to understand how each platform uniquely influences language change (Chukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the study

  1. To compare linguistic innovations on Facebook and Instagram.
  2. To identify key neologisms, syntactic, and semantic changes on each platform.
  3. To evaluate the influence of digital culture on language evolution.

Research questions

  1. What are the predominant linguistic innovations on Facebook versus Instagram?
  2. How do platform-specific features affect language creativity?
  3. What broader cultural factors drive these innovations in Nigerian digital discourse?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it offers a comparative perspective on digital linguistic innovation, contributing to our understanding of how different social media platforms shape language in Nigeria (Ibrahim, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study focuses on text-based posts on Facebook and Instagram in Nigerian digital discourse and does not consider other forms of media or offline language practices.

Definitions of terms

  • Linguistic Innovation: The creation of new words, expressions, or syntactic forms.
  • Facebook Post: A user-generated message on Facebook, often lengthy and narrative.
  • Instagram Post: A concise, visually oriented message on Instagram, typically with creative captions.
